Flight Academy, is a unique program based in Alberta, offering high school students the opportunity to obtain both their drone operator certification and private pilot’s license by the time they graduate. Their visit to 17 Wing provided an opportunity to see how these skills translate into real-world military aviation roles.

The day began at 402 “City of Winnipeg” Squadron, where the students received an in-depth briefing on the Air Combat Systems Officer (ACSO) trade, along with the opportunity to explore the CT-142 “Gonzo” before taking off for a familiarization flight. Giving the students the rare chance to experience the aircraft’s capabilities from the inside.

Following their time at 402 Sqn, the students met with Master Corporal (MCpl) Greico, an imagery technician from 17 Wing Imaging. MCpl Greico provided a hands-on demonstration of WISEGUY, the Wing’s imagery drone, explaining how it is used for aerial reconnaissance and documentation. As many of the students were already working toward drone certifications, this session provided valuable insight into military applications of drone technology.

After a well-earned lunch at the Wing kitchen, the group made their way back to Hangar 16, where they were met by members of 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron. The students toured one of the squadron’s CC-130H Hercules aircraft and received a briefing on search and rescue (SAR) operations. The Squadron shared details about how SAR Technicians utilize their specialized equipment and explained how 435 Sqn conducts airborne SAR missions across Canada.

Throughout the day, the students had the chance to engage with RCAF personnel, ask questions about military aviation, and see how their passion for flight could translate into future opportunities.

17 Wing Winnipeg was proud to host the Eagle Butte Flight Academy and showcase the diverse and dynamic world of military aviation. The visit not only provided an unforgettable experience for the students but also reinforced the importance of education and hands-on training in preparing the next generation of aviators.
