About the Work

"The Suffering of Christ" was inspired by the 1977 Franco Zeffirelli epic drama, Jesus of Nazareth, which chronicles the life of Jesus with Robert Powell in the role of Christ. The film had a profound impact on Busch, prompting him to depict the pain and suffering endured by the human side of the divine during the crucifixion. The painting captures the intense emotional and physical agony experienced by Christ, offering viewers a poignant reflection on his sacrifice.
